Yearly international Mars Rover Challenges are one of the main undertakings of the Mars Society. They are organized since 2007 and meet an ever increasing interest. Participation is limited to non-professional participants.
Participants, mostly universities but also Mars Society branches, construct their own Mars Rover, which must be able to fulfil certain tasks in an unknown terrain.
During a contest, normally in the desert in Utah near the MDRS, the winning team is determined.
